Coming On Home Soon takes place during World War II and is the story of a young girl named Ada Ruth whose mother leaves home to go to Chicago to find work. Since the men are away at war, women are needed to fill in for them at their jobs. While longing for Mama’s return back home with her grandmother, Ada Ruth tries to stay busy writing letters to Mama. She desperately awaits a letter from Mama in return saying that she will be coming on home soon. When Ada Ruth finds a stray kitten, her grandmother tells her that they cannot keep her because they are not able to care for her since they do not even have enough food for themselves with the war going on. Ada Ruth still gives the kitten milk and takes her in to keep her company. They find comfort in each other amidst the fear and loneliness they feel. Beautiful and comforting watercolors illustrate this poetic first-person narrative that tells a heartfelt and emotional story of longing, strength, and hope.
